Training as a Psychoanalytic or Psychodynamic Psychotherapist
Psychoanalytic psychotherapy requires of its practitioners a thorough understanding of their own problems in order to understand sensitively those of another person. Careful evaluation for training is necessary, with the core of the training being personal psychoanalytic therapy or analysis by appropriately experienced therapists. In addition, the training consists of careful supervision of clinical work by recognised supervisors as well as an understanding of theoretical concepts. It necessarily occurs over a long period of time. The training and practice of psychoanalytic psychotherapy require rigorous adherence to a strict code of ethics.
All the member institutions of the BPC are psychoanalytic in nature. Several of them provide a training in either psychoanalysis, analytical psychology , psychoanalytic psychotherapy, or child psychotherapy. Each has its individual pre-requisites and requirements for training, but as a general guide most require applicants to have a degree or qualification in the field of medicine, psychology or social work (or equivalent) and some experience in the field of mental health. All the trainings are for a minimum of four years and require candidates to undertake personal analysis or therapy with an approved analyst or therapist for a minimum of three times a week for the duration of the training. Candidates are also required to have extensive supervised clinical experience with two approved supervisors and to attend seminars covering theory and technique.
For further information you should contact the training administrator or secretary of the organisations themselves.
